Gum Disease Treatment

Did you know around 1 in 3 Australian adults had moderate or severe gum disease in a national study?*

Gum disease can develop without pain. Bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath or receding gums may be the first signs that your gums need attention.

We help you understand what is happening, explain your options and develop a treatment plan to protect the support around your natural teeth.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease develops when bacteria in dental plaque trigger inflammation. Gingivitis affects the gums and can usually be reversed with professional cleaning and effective daily care.

Periodontitis affects the deeper tissues and bone that hold your teeth in place. As this support is lost, teeth may become loose. Treatment aims to control the disease and reduce the risk of further damage.

Changes worth checking

  • Bleeding, swollen or tender gums

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Receding gums or teeth that look longer

  • Loose teeth, new gaps or changes in your bite

These changes are worth checking, even if nothing hurts. A gum assessment can also identify problems before you notice symptoms.

Your treatment journey

Understand your gum health

We examine your gums, measure the spaces around your teeth and take X-rays where needed to assess the supporting bone. We explain the findings, your options and the proposed costs, with time for your questions.

Begin with non-surgical care

Treatment usually begins with careful cleaning below the gumline to remove bacterial plaque and hardened deposits. Local anaesthetic can help keep you comfortable. We also help you establish an effective home cleaning routine and reassess your gums after healing.

Review and treat remaining areas

Not everyone needs surgery. If deep pockets or inflammation remain, further treatment may help. Gum surgery improves access to difficult areas; in suitable cases, regenerative treatment may restore some lost support. We explain the benefits, limitations and recovery before you decide.

Lifelong care for your gums

Periodontitis is a lifelong condition with no permanent cure. Like diabetes, it can be managed, but it needs ongoing attention even when you feel well.

Active treatment is the first step. Daily cleaning and regular periodontal maintenance help keep the disease stable. At these visits, we monitor your gums, remove bacterial deposits and check for recurrence. Your schedule is tailored to your needs. Even when bleeding stops, continuing care remains essential.

Concerned about your gums?

Whether you have noticed changes or your dentist has recommended an assessment, we can help you understand your gum health and plan your next step.
